Mailbag question: Defense is soft
GBMW,
Hi Guys,
You’ve been bang on since last spring regarding the lack of talent and soft play of our defense. Nothing illustrated it more than when I flipped on the Big 10 Network the other day and watched the 98 Michigan/Washington State Rose Bowl. Now that was a fundamentally sound, good tackling, nasty defense!!
My question is do you guys see anyone on the roster who could step up in the next few years and be the kind of defensive leader who will knock the opponents head off every play, play with an edge, and make the Big House an intimidating place to play again. I’m sick of Indiana, Purdue, and anyone for that matter, running all over our defense when we know it a running play. This is MICHIGAN, buckle up the chinstraps and take the Purdue's of the world to the woodshed from start to finish!!

Thanks for the question and comment.
In our opinion most of the top defensive talent is in the freshmen and sophomore classes.
A few players who have impressed us with their physical play include Demens, who has a definite edge to his game, JT Turner who not only runs well but fills like a linebacker, and Mike Jones who will definitely smack you.
Yes, we need more of this type of player. Players with talent that also possess “an edge.”

Think Mike Jones has any possibility of seeing time at safety next year? His name hasn't even surfaced in the mix.
I caught a glipse of Demens later in the season this year, he's going to be a solid player for U of M once he gets some more game experience.
Mike Jones at safety -- I do not think so at all. He (IMO) looks to be at stevie Brown's position or will likely depending on how much bigger he gets another linebacker position.
Demens is one of those kids that needs playing time to actually see what he can do. He is a run stopper and surprised we did not see him more at Wisconsin and also Ohio State in the 2nd half where Ohio State was running all the time.
