Michigan Hockey Tidbits: Hockey game in the "Big House" in 2010?
A few days ago, it was announced that the Michigan Hockey program was going to play Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium in 2010. Well, it looks like Michigan Hockey might be holding there own version of outdoor hockey in 2010 at Michigan Stadium. The "Big House" will be completed for the 2010 football season, so will be ready to go for any events.
We're wondering if they would try to change the "College Hockey Showcase," since that is on the last weekend in November, or the first weekend of December depending on the year. In addition, that would not be the year for it to be held in Ann Arbor / East Lansing so they would have to change some things around, but that would be a pretty neat deal if they had a double-header each night with those four teams, but a lot of things would have to work out to make that happen. They usually have a Michigan State game before Christmas and then after Christmas they have the "GLI" tournament so it will be interesting to see what happens.
Michigan is researching for staging a hockey game to try to get over 100,000 plus to pack the "Big House" and set a new outdoor attendance record for watching a hockey game. Right now, they are looking at trying to set something up for the month of December for this event.
Michigan State which had Michigan at Spartan Stadium in the "The Cold War" has the attendance record with 74,544 fans. Camp Randall Stadium has a capacity of 80,321.
In other Hockey news, Red Berenson has agreed to a rolling one-year extension, but do not take that to mean this is possibly his last year. He would really like to coach in that outdoor game for sure if it happens.
