Eroc and Coach,
I keep on hearing that Coach Rod talking about the 3-3-5 defense, but Coach Shafer being a 4-3 guy does it seem like the 3-3-5 might get pushed on the defense and could this be a problem down the road? Isn't it better sometimes just to do one thing than to do many things and not do them as well? Isn't that the problem we had when Coach Hermann was here we were trying to do to much and a lot of the players were worried about what to do and just play.
Great blog guys ... just found it.

Thanks for the question. Depends how you use your 3-3-5. If you try to play multiple bases, with different rules it can cause a problem. If you use 4-3 as your base and 3-3 odd stack as nickel it should not cause a huge problem.
There are two schools of thought regarding how to correlate your base and nickel. One school thinks it is better to use 4-2 as nickel with 4-3. Theory there is keeping D line play consistent is important. I am more of the second school who believe that keeping linebackers play it the same is best way to go. Just been my experience that teaching linebacker’s two sets of rules and reads tougher than teaching defensive line two sets. Either is necessarily right or wrong, just a matter of personal preference

Either way, they are both gap-control defenses, so it shouldn't be too hard for the d-line. Even though they line up head-up in the 3-3, they still slant one gap or the other. Shouldn't be too difficult for the guys to transition. The tough part will be finding the athletes versatile and smart enough for the outside safety positions.
