Michigan, Notre Dame big rivals? Depends whom you ask

ANN ARBOR -- Sitting in the press box at Michigan Stadium, making sure he missed not a play Saturday during Michigan's tense 16-6 victory over Miami (Ohio), Bob Chappuis tried to put into perspective where Notre Dame fit within the tight galaxy of Wolverine football rivalries.
Chappuis seemed the right man to consult. He has, after all, been involved in so much history himself, at Ann Arbor and on the loftier world scale.
It was Chappuis who parachuted from a crashing B-25 bomber over Italy in February of 1945 and spent three nervous, nearly catastrophic, months hidden in homes by the Italian resistance. He returned to the University of Michigan in 1946 as a quarterback so gifted that he later appeared on the cover of Time magazine.
