Scouting report: Toledo at Michigan
by John Heuser The Ann Arbor News
The University of Michigan football team has never lost to a Mid-American Conference opponent. Now would be a bad time to start. Considering Big Ten dates with sixth-ranked Penn State and No. 23 Michigan State loom later this month, the Wolverines (2-3) understand the importance of winning today's home game against Toledo.
The Rockets (1-4) are struggling, too. They've lost three straight games, and were shut out a week ago by Ball State.
Michigan on offense
Ranked last offensively in the Big Ten, Michigan hasn't scored more than 27 points in a game this season. Plagued by turnovers (it ranks 113th out of 119 bowl subdivision teams), Michigan has also been undone by inconsistencies throwing the ball and running it. Quarterback Steven Threet is completing just under half his passes, and the running attack, led by freshman Sam McGuffie, averages a mere 122.8 yards per game. Part of the problem has to do with the offensive line, which has been switched around in four of five games.
