AD voices his support for U-M's Rodriguez

ANN ARBOR -- Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez is 2-4 in his first season with the Wolverines, but he has the firm support of athletic director Bill Martin.

U-M is coming off a 13-10 loss to Toledo, its first loss in 25 games against Mid-American Conference teams. It plays at No. 3 Penn State on Saturday.

"There's absolutely no question I'm totally supportive of Rich," Martin, who hired Rodriguez, said Tuesday. "Was I surprised with the loss last Saturday? Sure I was, no question about it. But I think he's the right man for this program at this time.

"You always have to, when you're sitting in my seat, look at long term. You can't look at instant gratification."

Martin preached patience. He reminded that last year in his first season as Alabama's football coach, Nick Saban's team lost to unheralded Louisiana-Monroe.

"And where is he now? Two in the country? Second year," Martin said of Saban. "So things turn quickly."

Also of note, Martin said Rodriguez's contract is "almost done."
