Mailbag Question: Follow up Questions from Wisconsin
Hey,
These terms were used in your posting on the recap of the Wisconsin game. Could you elaborate on these? I do not understand the jargon.
1. Kicking the defense to the quick side
2. Stemming the defense back to formation
3. Max protection
Thanks….Q

Thanks for the follow up question and hope this clears things up.
1) In Michigan’s base 4-3 you line the strength of four Defensive lines with the Nose Tackle in 1-technique away from the Tight End and Defensive Tackle to the Tight End in 3-tech, or outside shade of the Offensive Guard.
In first half, Michigan was lining up the Defensive Tackle opposite, with 1-tech to the Tight End. To magnify the problem Wisconsin was also using a wing along with Tight End. This was causing Michigan to be outmanned at point of attack.
2) Stemming defensive front means you slide the front four to opposite direction you lined up. So after Wisconsin lined up with Tight End and Wing, Michigan switched the Defensive Tackles, moving the 1-Tech to 3-tech, and 3-tech to 1-tech.
3) In max protection, you keep two additional blockers in to help protect the Quarterback. Can be 2 Running Backs, 2 Tight Ends, or 1 Running Back and 1 Tight End.
