Borseth, Players Meet With Media
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held its annual media day today (Tuesday, Oct. 14) in Crisler Arena. Head coach Kevin Borseth and all of the players were on hand to speak with the media.
Borseth and the Wolverines begin practice this Friday (Oct. 17). Michigan opens the 2008-09 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Kentucky.
Below are quotes from Media Day:
Michigan Head Coach Kevin Borseth
Opening statement... "Thank you for coming out. It's nice to see friendly faces, faces I've seen in the past, which is good and I think you guys are trying to help out as much as we are trying to build a program as well, we really appreciate that. It's that time again -- basketball season. We have been building up, getting ready for this Friday night and this Saturday when we start practice and we are excited to get the season going. We have five seniors this year, which really bodes well for some sense of continuity. We're excited about that. The seniors are good kids, they are working hard and we are hoping we can make something positive out of the season. If you take a look at our schedule, it's a very difficult schedule. Not only in terms of the teams that we play, but there are two games that we play where the turnaround time with the travel is really difficult. I think that in a 10-day stretch we travel to Duke and USC and we play three other games around that and the three games we play around that are real difficult. I think that is probably the most demanding part for us, not only are we playing good teams but the travel around it as well. We have to find a way to make something positive out of it and win some games; that's probably the biggest thing."
On junior center Krista Phillips... "She stayed here all summer and she had her knee cleaned out. She has an ongoing knee problem that she had cleaned out a little bit. She spent the majority of the summer in the pool and she slimmed down. She lost some weight, which is good. Yesterday we had an hour workout with the squad. I've got some time during the week I'm allowed to spend, and she certainly seems to be in much better shape physically. We still have to teach her how to score around the basket because she's a big aircraft carrier down around there and we need to be able to get some points out of her because we do rely on her pretty heavily. At this point right now, she looks like she's in pretty good shape, physically; we just have to mentally get her in a position where she can make some baskets down there.
