Michigan Football Tidbits: MaizeMan's point of view
Okay it is easy now to look after six games and say this team lacks talent. Hate to be a "fence sitter", but I agree and disagree.
Does this team have as much talent as in the past? No.
Does this team play up to the talent it has? Even a bigger No.
Since to some read my posts carefully I think you will agree that I have said since spring that this team does have talent, but unfortunately, it is young talent. I have been warning people about the Quarterback situation for months now and during the summer took some criticism while pointing out some huge flaws in Threets delivery and about Sheridan. Some just saw us pointing the fingers at Sheridan while skipping over the Threet mistakes.
PLEASE READ THIS STATEMENT:
My main issue with this team and Coach Rod's approach so far (and keep in mind I have been the one telling people that Coach Rod will change, has changed to some extent, but needs to change faster).
Coach Rod simply thought his coaching ability and his schemes would take lesser talent and win immediately at Michigan like it did at WV. I now believe he feels much differently thus my post about recruiting being the only way out of this.
Let’s talk talent
DL---Graham, RVB, Sagesse, Banks all return next yr and I maintain that most colleges would love this talent to build a defense.
LB---How many times have I mentioned that Ezeh is not a MLB, Thompson is playing out of position, Mouton is off and on, but probably our best LB. Speed is lacking which I have pointed out since spring.
CB---No excuse for CB play we have talent there.
Safety---Brown is a huge disappointment, Harrison has never been good in pass coverage, again lack of speed which I have pointed out our lack of recruiting at safety has been inexcusable.
Off topic---but yes---I stand by my opinion that Carr did slack off in recruiting---as did many on his staff. In fact---DeBord and English were really the only ones who held up in the past years.
Offensively
Next year---we will start a new Quarterback
OL--Schilling and Moosman will be only sure starters along with Barnum.
WR---I like our WR's---sorry--just do---I think the QB situation is so bad it makes our WR's look bad--but talent is there.
Conclusion---I support Coach Rod---I like the young kids we have. But good coaching is getting the most out of talent available----and simply has not happened. I think this experience will make Michigan a better program and Coach Rod a better coach. Just going to be ugly until then.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My message to Coach Rod
1)--don’t quit on these kids. Keep coaching as hard as you can. Please find something team can do successfully and emphasize that---even if it means taking a kid like C. Brown and making him QB.
2) Call every top recruit in the country---even if he has committed elsewhere and tell them they have a great chance to play as a frosh next year. Please---only way back is to recruit great players---not 3 star---great players. We need talent---and badly.
3) Can someone please recruit a top OL-
again---recruiting is only way out of this.
4) We have one game to save our season---MSU---everything should point to that game---it will be a huge upset--but we can win that game.
5) Please can the inside "sweep" play---or whatever you call it. That play has to have amounted to about negative 100 yds by now.
6) just a suggestion--but move Dorrenstein to RT---move Ortmann back to LT--play Schilling at LG---
7) Play press coverage for the rest of the yr----I cant believe even you are not tired of the pitch and catch for 5 yards when opposition has a 3rd and 4.
8) Are we just incapable of defending any slant pass?----try this--play a standard 4-3---quit being so cute on defense---just line up and play basic D---and let the kids play----
9) Again---recruit, recruit, recruit-------this is not WVA---you cannot out scheme opposition here--you have to beat them---and beat them physically.

Harrison is supposedly one of the fastest players on the team.
ReplyDeleteFred,
ReplyDeleteBeing track fast and being football fast are two differnet things. Just as Trent is track fast, but you see him getting burnt in coverage and players pulling away from him.
Being fast in football means you have to have quick instincts and move to the ball in a hurry.
You can be a slow track guy, but be one of the fastest football players on the field because how you react to the play.
Very good read. Thank you! I am disappointed by this year, but I think the future does look bright.
