Mailbag Question: Regarding the spread offense that Michigan runs

I watched the Texas Tech game last night is this type of offense that Michigan will have in the future.

I know there are several different type of spread offense's, but where does Michigan compare too in the future if any.

Can you compare us to Texas Tech, Northwestern, Minnesota, West Virginia, etc.

Thanks

Fred

Thanks for the question. Michigan is running the Quarterback read option version of spread.

It is the version that Coach Rod is given credit for developing. It is the system that Coach Magee has most experience with, and system that Coach Smith has run as player and coach.

If they are not going to change with Threet at Quarterback, it is our opinion it is not likely to change. It has only a little in common with Texas Tech, Missouri, or Minnesota in our opinion as those are primarily passing versions of the spread.

In addition, is closer to version ran by Northwestern.

  1. sorry, but this is a terrible answer. talking about "passing spread"s or "running spreads" is a cheap way out. those are just play-calling tendencies, not the structure or philosophy of the offense.

texas tech runs a version of the air raid, which was developed by hal mumme (the man who brought you tim couch). it's originally designed to be run with two backs and the qb under center, so it's not even really a spread offense, tech has just modified it to be run out of 4 and 5 wide sets. a lot of the concepts came from ucla oc norm chow when he was at byu. it is very different from what rod runs or will run.

i'm less familiar with missouri's offense, but it seems to take some of tech's formations and graft them on to a lot of urban meyer's passing concepts. it's sort of it's own thing though. people will be copying it soon.

minnesota from what i've seen runs a fairly traditional rodriguez style spread, they just don't run the qb very much. but the structure is mostly the same. minnesota's offensive coordinator was randy walker's oc at northwestern, and they ran rod's offense verbatim after learning it from him during his clemson tenure. so yes, our offense could look more like minnesota's in the future, although given what happened saturday, let's hope not.
