Mailbag Question: Regarding Oklahoma and Michigan

Hey guys,

Keep up the great work and do not worry about those "anonymous poster/s" that hide their name along with their e-mail address when ripping your blog about using the proper grammar. This is not the New York Times, Detroit News, or the Toledo Blade. It is a blog page that I come to read the information/content not to see if you spelled every word right, used the proper grammar or even punctuated right. Those people need to get a life.

Now to my question. I heard Coach Rod talk about Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma offense coming to talk with them about their offense. I have watched them several times this year and do not see any similarities at all besides actually being defined a "spread offense".

My question is does Coach Rod "Toot" his own horn because how good Oklahoma is doing right now? Another question I do not see any similarities in these two offenses at all do you guys?

Isn't Oklahoma more of a pro style spread offense where Michigan is using Coach Rod "spread option read" offense?

Can you explain the similarities and some of the differences because there play calling does not look anything like ours when we use more bubble screens than any team alive it seems.

Fred

Thanks for the question and comments. The two offenses are very different. There are many more differences than similarities.

Both use spread formations and run out of the shotgun most of the time (although Oklahoma will get under center and play I-formation more than Michigan does). In addition, Oklahoma will use tight ends in the offense more than Coach Rod and staff will.

Oklahoma does use some of the same plays that Michigan does: the inside belly, the zone series, and some quarterback read option. Oklahoma just has a much more varied offense than Michigan does at this time.

The biggest difference in our opinion is in the passing game. Oklahoma uses a more complex, Indianapolis Colts, and New England Patriots pro style passing game.

As to why Oklahoma wants to clinic with Michigan, could be as simple as learning about the Michigan read option spread offense so that they can have a better idea how to defend it. On the other hand, it could be that they want to learn a couple new things in regards to reads and blocking that Oklahoma would like to incorporate.
