ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team handed Duke (No. 4 AP/No. 4 ESPN/USA Today) its first loss of the 2008-09 season as the Wolverines claimed the upset victory, 81-73, on Saturday (Dec. 6) at Crisler Arena. The victory marks Michigan's second win over a top-five opponent this year and the team's first triumph over Duke since U-M defeated the Blue Devils by the same score at Crisler Arena in 1997.

Junior forward DeShawn Sims (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Pershing HS) posted a career-high 28 points and tied a personal best with 12 rebounds, earning his fourth career double-double and third of the year. Freshman guard Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./ Chesterton HS) also finished with a career-best 14 points on four three-pointers and two free throws.

The Wolverines converted 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) attempts from the floor and shot 50 percent from downtown in the second half to eclipse the 80-point plateau for the second time this season. Michigan's defense also presented a strong front in the second stanza, forcing eight turnovers and recording five steals.
