Mailbag question about the Utah offense
Hello:
I was on GBW the other day and noticed you guys did not comment (unless I missed it) when the topic was about Utah and they are running the offense we are running and look at them. Is this true and what do you guys think? Will we be like Utah this coming year or soon to be.
What do we do the same as Michigan and what does Utah do differently?
Greg

Thanks for the question.
We would be very happy if Michigan included parts of what we saw the Utah offense run.
It does have some similarities to what Coach Rod and staff use -- or plan to use. The formations are basically the same, and the running game is also similar. Both use the inside zone series, some of the split end screens, and the short crossing routes to the slots.
After that, things are quite different. Utah uses the vertical game a lot more than Michigan did this year. They also used different combinations and routes to take advantage of what Alabama was doing.
Utah also used their tight ends differently: For Michigan, Koger and others were used primarily in slot, and Massey at split end for slot screens. We would like to see Michigan use Koger and other tight ends as a standard tight end positioning to force defenses keep their safeties in middle of the field.
