Coaches Corner: A little rant

The somewhat eccentric, and certainly eclectic, Thomas Paine penned these famous words as the opening of his famous articles named The American Crisis: "These are the times that try men's souls". Further: “The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will in this crisis, shrink.”

Well, these are the times that try Michigan souls. Between 3-9, all the preseason disrespect from the media, and listening to the blustering fans of our rivals, UM better be ready to kick some serious *SS. All of us are getting anxious for this season to start, in part so that we can rid the memory and terrible taste in our mouths from 2008. This is all very well; we all love Michigan football and are proud to say so.

Somewhat disconcerting is that clearly some of our posters/bloggers on various message boards are getting worried, anxious, nervous, apprehensive, etc. The tension is building. Let’s not have a rerun of last season. Disagree, debate, or vent, all are 100% okay in our opinion. Just do not continue the personal attacks and name calling that unfortunately followed such a Dunkirk or Titanic type of season.

This will be, one way or another, a most interesting season. UM is going to have ups and downs, good things and bad things will occur, reasons to cheer and reasons to cuss will be provided, likely weekly. This is not going to be a straight-up one season to the top type of improvement. The program will most likely improve incrementally. Have patience with the team and each other. Have each other’s backs.

As was stated last season, we are a like a giant hillbilly family here. We will fight like heck with each other, but when others kick one of our own, they have to take us all on. Let's not see the terms “haters” and “kool-aid drinkers” become regular parts of this board again.

Let's keep expectations in order, let's not call T. Forcier a failure, bust, whatever, because he throws an interception. Let's not start calling for coaches' heads after one game; this roster still needs tons of work.

Please do not expect miracles from Coach Robinson, or expect T. Forcier to be a Heisman candidate from day one. This team is still going to have some big growing pains to go through.

Western Michigan will be the first page of a new novel, but the entire novel is not yet written. The sketch is on the drawing board.

In times like these that try men’s souls, support is a great gift that can be freely given from fans to our team. And remember, very little went right for Thomas Paine, but his struggle ended successfully. Do not, as Thomas says, shrink, but instead remain steadfast.
