Mailbag question: Base defense

It seems to me that we stay in our base defensive formation regardless of down or distance that is a 4-3-2-2. We do crowd the line of scrimmage when it dictates, but we use the same 11 players. Why is it, when down and distance dictate an OBVIOUS passing situation, we never seem to insert an extra DB for the "Nickel" or even two more DB's for a "Dime"? We seem to be burned with amazing regularity on these 3rd and longs. Couldn't we try something else? Thanks for your comments

Thanks for the question.

Michigan is playing what we call a hybrid defense. It is playing nickel all the time.

Stevie Brown is the quick/strong side linebacker is capable of playing in coverage and this allows Michigan to not change personnel when needing nickel or another defensive back on the field.

Like anything else, the value of the hybrid defense is debated.
