Coach's Corner: Rules, Gaps, Techniques, and Blitz packages in the base 3-3-5 -- Part 4 Ram

Ram is Mike and outside linebacker blitz package. The Mike and outside linebacker to the call side will blitz.

Here are some rules and terminology clarification. Remember, programs use terminology that is not always universal.

Gaps:

(D gap) TE (C gap) OT (B gap) OG (B gap) OC (A gap) OG (B gap) OT (C gap) .. (D gap)
Rules

Rules:

DT: his alignment is a 5-technique and he has C gap.

NT: angles hard to the A gap away from the call side, in this case to his left.

DE: his alignment is a 5-technique and he has C gap.

SLB (Strong-side Linebacker): he lines up in a 50-technque, stacked at 4 yards behind the defensive tackle and he has B gap.

MLB (Middle Linebacker): he stacks behind the nose tackle at 4 yards off the ball. He blitzes hard to the call side B gap, in this case to his right.

WLB (Weak-side Linebacker): he lines up in a 50-technique, stacked at 4 yards behind the defensive end. He blitzes hard to the A gap on his side of the ball.

The MLB and WLB cross with MLB going first.

Spur (Strong Safety): his alignment is 4x4 (yards) off the tight end or the last man on the line of scrimmage, and he has D gap.

Bandit (Strong Safety): his alignment is 4x4 (yards) off the last man on the line of scrimmage, and he has D gap.

Field CB: he lines up 1x8 (yards) off of the #1 wide receiver and he secures the sideline.

Free Safety: he lines up 12 yards of the ball and splits the two #1 wide receivers, he has the alley in run support.

Boundary CB: he lines up 1x8 (yards) off the #1 wide receiver and secures the sideline.


Strong Side Ram Stack Blitz:

Rules:

DT: his alignment is a 5-technique and he has C gap.

NT: he angles hard to the A gap away from the call side, in this case to his right.

DE: his alignment is a 5-technique and he has C gap.

SLB (Strong-side Linebacker): he lines up in a 50-technique, stacked at 4 yards behind the defensive tackle. He blitzes hard to the A gap on his side of the ball.

MLB (Middle Linebacker): he stacks behind the nose tackle at 4 yards off the ball. He blitzes hard to the call side B gap, in this case to his left.

WLB (Weak-side Linebacker): he lines up in a 50-technique, stacked at 4 yards behind the defensive end. He has B gap responsibility.

The MLB and SLB cross with MLB going first.

Spur (Strong Safety): his alignment is 4x4 (yards) off the tight end or last man on the line of scrimmage, and he has D gap.
Bandit (Strong Safety): his alignment is 4x4 (yards) off the last man on the line of scrimmage, and he has D gap.

Field CB: he lines up 1x8 (yards) off the #1 wide receiver and secures the sideline.

FS (Deep Safety): he lines up 12 yards of the ball and splits the two #1 wide receivers, he has the alley in run support.

Boundary CB: he lines up 1x8 (yards) off the #1 wide receiver and secures the sideline.
