Mailbag Question:An Alternative way to run the option

Hey Guys,

Has Coach Rodriguez ever used alternative ways to run the option from the spread when the quarterback is not a running type?
I'm thinking of the option the St. Louis Rams used to run with a wide receiver receiving a handoff, then acting as the option man with the running back trailing. I think the San Diego Chargers did that too back in the 1980s.

Thanks for the question. The quarterback does need to be a great runner to make option attack successful. Other factors such as keeping proper phase, riding the fake properly, timing, freezing contains, and holding onto the ball to last second are just as important as quarterbacks pure running ability.

Steven Threet actually ran the pure option fairly well this spring, but he was no Pat White. Also Pat White can’t throw the ball like Threet. It was not having a talented ball carrier at slot that made the scheme less effective.

As for running option other ways. I have seen Coach Rod run option with direct snap to running back lined up behind offensive center. He did it once this spring at Michigan.
