Mailbag Question: About Coach Rod Part 2
Did you watch the interview of Coach Rod on the Motor City Bowl broadcast? I was very troubled by his use of the words “I hope” and “I think”. These are not the power words of a leader. Great coaches acknowledge their shortcomings with very direct action words. I walked away with more concerns than I already had about his ability to lead, Thoughts?

Thanks for the question.
Going off the previous article yesterday: in our opinion, this is not a bad thing. We actually, think that a little humility will do Coach Rod some good.
Nevertheless, going 3-9 can make anybody a bit more humble. We got the feeling that Coach Rod really believed that through a combination of improved strength and conditioning, innovative schemes, game planning, and coaching, he could make up for lack of personnel at key positions.
When things did not work out as planned, you could see -- and hear -- the frustration mounting in Coach Rod. Approaching this off-season and next year with a more realistic expectation, a true grasp of what he and the team are facing, can only help.

That is the most retarded question I think I have ever read on any blog/forum, etc.
ReplyDeleteSaying "I hope" makes you a bad leader? hahaha.
Yes, it does make you a bad leader. Would you feel better if Bush said, "I hope we can take some action for the terrorist bombings in NYC." OR "We have just declared war - no one can come in to our country and treat us like that."
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmm...very good point Sales Cooke!
stupid question gets a good answer...sales cooke obviously you play guru tony robbins for a living...which is fine, and it works on some people, motivating them to do more, produce more etc. blah blah blah... (ive been to a million company sponsored sales seminars)...
ReplyDeletehowever....when you start to TRY to analyze "coach speak" in an interview, press conference, quotes etc. you need to take a step back and realize that a) the coach may have no idea on how to present himself to the media... aka "John L syndrome" or b) be somewhat spiteful and dodgign of the media "Lloyd Carr" or c) be a down home boy who wants to be as open with the media as he can, for better or for worse (often worse) aka "Rich Rod syndrome..."
well, in any event it means squat. What matters is a) how RR motivates his team and b) how they perform on the field.
both of these points are still way undecided...but please spare yourself the difficulty in trying to read between the lines in "coach speak"....let's wait til he has a QB that can actually hit some wide open WRs down field before we totally judge this guy.
peace
Well most people want to hear that a leader is confident in what he believes and tells others.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that is why the question was asked and do not see a problem asking it.
Just like a lot of people have a problem putting their name on what they write and hide behind a keyboard.
Like we have said a lot Coach Rod is not a political speaker, but he is a good football coach.
