Mailbag question: Dropped Passes

You mentioned dropped passes, Tate was 10 of 13, I never saw numbers on Cone or Kennedy so what were the total(s) completion's and misses / drops. You also mentioned the defense looking bad, so how / why ?

Every article I've read, said that the defense was playing with one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the break? Finally, do you think that a lot of what you saw at the spring game was watered down offensively / defensively?

Thanks Don

Thanks for the question.

Most of the drops were from a week earlier when we saw them at the coach’s clinic. There were some drops by split ends, but more by the slot receivers. The problem with some of the drops or bad throws might be due to a number of factors. During the clinic many of Tate’s throws were tipped by the slot receivers because they were thrown too high for them, or the slot receivers are just a little shorter than Tate was thinking. Many of those balls could become turnovers going the other way during the season.

Some of the defensive problems were lack of a pass rush, not keeping outside leverage / contain, gave up too many big plays, and missed tackles.

What concerns us is at this stage the defense should be light years ahead of the offense. In addition, the offense dominated both scrimmages we watched. Not sure if watered down is right term, offense showed a lot, and we watched defense in drills working on a large package. We are also confident that we did not see the entire defensive package Michigan will use this year.
