Mailbag question Paulus and Jason Forcier

What do you guys think of the Paulus and Jason Forcier situation and what does this mean for this year? What does it do for Tate and Denard? Will one of them (Denard) red-shirt?

How does Jason Forcier looking to become part of the team help or also hurt the program?

Thanks for the question.

In our opinion both Paulus and Jason Forcier would provide quality depth and competition.

To us, this is not even a serious debate. We know that Paulus is not going to be part of this team right now, but either way, we do not see why it was such a big issue.

We would have loved to have both of those players on the Michigan team for one year. It could have only helped the young quarterbacks.

Both would have had the disadvantage of not participating in spring drills and would be there only for back-up roles if Tate Forcier would get hurt. They are basically an insurance policy.

We believe that Tate will handle most of the snaps as long as he is healthy. We think that Denard will be used for 5-10 snaps a game to break things up and bring a different aspect to the game.

Both the others, Paulus and Jason F. would simply be short-term players who would have an uphill fight to win a starting position. This does not hurt recruiting at all because both would be gone after the season.

If either or both plays at Michigan for single season that would be okay. If neither ever steps on field at Michigan, that would also be okay.

Competition is always a good thing and, frankly, the more players we have that can compete, the better -- no matter where they play.

The only negative we see would be the amount of reps that the young quarterbacks (Tate and Denard) would get in fall practice: having more quarterbacks means each would get less.

If Jason comes to Michigan, having an older brother around would help settle Tate down and help him understand what to expect, which would only make things easier for Tate, and Michigan, long term.

  1. Do you mean Chris Forcier from UCLA? I don't think Jason Forcier has eligibility (sp?) left. The rumor I knew about was Jason coming to UM to be a grad assistant.

  2. John,

We mean Jason ... he is looking to come to Michigan as a grad assistant, but also there might be a chance that he has one year left of eligibility left.

Michigan was looking at Chris Forcier as well, but only as a wide receiver prospect, but do not know what he is thinking right now if that is something he is interested in right now or if he is willing to leave UCLA for Michigan for a wide receiver position.

  3. What a shame. All the guys on D were looking forward to having a DUKIE as a tackling dummy.
