Mailbag question: Regarding Florida Kids

Thanks for your comment and insight from Spring Practice. I appreciate your candid assessment of what you are seeing when you watch practice. I guess I do not have a question per se, but one of your comments from your post that describes the offense in Thursday’s practice caught my eye: “One comment on the Florida kids -- it is so obvious that they have football instincts better than most. (Something the water? the air? the oranges?)

I spent several years living in Florida in the early 90s, and had a chance to observe Florida HS football close up. There is one huge difference in Florida HS football that I believe in large part accounts for the seemingly superior talent of Florida players. This difference can be summarized in two words – Spring Practice. Florida High School Athletic Association rules allow a full spring practice for high school teams that is even more extensive than what the NCAA rules permit.
Keep up the great work! I greatly enjoy your blog!

Thanks for the question and comments.

Agreed: Florida kids have two big advantages over kids in other states.

#1) Florida has fantastic, well organized seven on seven team competitions.
Their 7-on-7 competitions are All-Star teams from one area playing All-Star teams from other areas. This type of competition, which features the best against the best, does nothing but further help develop the great athletes in Florida. There is no substitute for this type of top-level competition.

#2) Spring Football. It gives coaches and players a window of time to work on fundamentals without the pressure and time squeeze of preparing for a game and season.
