Michigan Football Tidbits: Most Improved on Offense
Michigan Football Tidbits: Most Improved on Offense
Offense: MaizeMan
1) Ortmann: Not a sexy pick, but sometimes we forget what Ortmann has been through since coming to Michigan. He was recruited from Texas as a tight end, and immediately upon arriving at Michigan was moved to offensive tackle and asked by former S&C coach to bulk up as quickly as possible. The results were Ortmann bulked up all right, but lost a great deal of his quickness.
Then when he is about to win a starting position he was injured (chest injury) and for an extended period could not lift weights. He lost most of his strength. Then we change coaches and while we like to talk about all the different defensive coaches, the change in schemes on offense was a new world for the offensive line. A year ago he started, but had major problems in the offense. Ortmann, however, continued to work and was praised by Barwis for his leadership and has really become a very good left tackle in this offense.
2) C. Brown: Two reasons: one, is he is healthy and second, he wants to play. For three years many have questioned whether if healthy, he really had the desire to play. This year we see a completely different kid.
3) Huyge: This is an obvious choice, but could have mentioned almost anyone on the offensive line.
Offense: CoachBt
1) Huyge: Big jump from last year and a great surprise.
2) C. Brown: Not just fast any more--he now has quickness and elusiveness. He is capable of breaking a big one from anywhere on the field.
3) Ortmann: Stepping up to be one of the leaders of the offensive line.
Offense: ErocWolverine
1) C. Brown: I think he is the most improved player. He has gained the speed back that we first saw when he arrived early for spring ball his frewhman year. Let us hope that he stays healthy and that he and Minor can be a great one – two punch. He really looks to be ready to take his game to the next level.
2) Huyge: Wow, did he surprise us when we saw him at the clinic! For those who care to remember, last year we said that he had the potential to be a very good player if he put the time in--and it sure does look like he did. Will he be able to hold off Omameh? Who knows. But right now he is doing a great job and needs to continue to work hard.
3) Webb: I am going away from my two friends here. I love Ortman, but I am going with Webb because he has put the time in and really seems to get ‘it” now. He is looking at serious playing time and is pushing Koger at tight end. the competition will only raise both of their levels of play. Koger and Webb could be huge weapons in this offense, but the biggest thing is getting them the ball. Webb really impressed me this spring and I wanted to give him some props for fighting back after last year. He was one of the players that didn't seem to be right for the change and we didn't know if he'd stick around. But he has, and the team will benefit from it.
3a) Ortmann: He has made the left side of the line solid along with Schilling at left guard. Looks like he finally got the right body type to play the offensive line at Michigan. One problem he had when he got here was that he was on the late night pizza diet and then gained too much weight. Under Barwis he has lost that weight, gained strength, and gained mobility as well. Ortman and Huyge have been a major upgrade from last year’s offensive line.
