Mailbag question: What are your expectations of the defense this coming year?

What are your expectations of the defense this coming year? How does the defense differ from last year’s defense and how does the depth issue get resolved on defense that you guys seems to be lacking?

Thanks for the question.

Depth issue probably does not get resolved this season. It is going to take some time to build up the quality talent base that is needed.

Defense differs in scheme and personnel from 2008. This season Michigan will primarily be a zone blitz team playing both three and four-man fronts.

Expectations?

If Michigan can stay healthy, there is enough talent to be a competent defense.

Our biggest concerns are at linebacker and safety.

If Michigan loses Mike Martin or B. Graham for any length of time, things could get very ugly in a big hurry. This probably the thinnest Michigan defense has seen in our lifetime watching Michigan football.
