Mailbag question: Why didn’t they play 1st team vs. 1st team in the Spring Game?
Hi there,
I was wondering if you could answer a question:
What is the reasoning for featuring the 1st team offense vs. the 2nd team defense, and vice versa, at the spring game? Forcier lit up the scoreboard, but it was against a bunch of kids who normally would not see the field in a Big 10 game. Practicing 1st team vs. 1st team would be a stiffer test, and would therefore be better preparation for playing a real game.
So why didn’t they play 1st vs. 1st?
Best regards,
Marc S.from New York, NY.

Thanks for the question.
One of the reasons this is done is due to the lack of depth.
Going ones against ones can lead to more injuries. Another reason for this is let the ones gain confidence along with fans who watch and gain confidence seeing the team doing well.
Let us just say that all the coaches were not happy about this as well at least when they did this at the practices / scrimmages we attended.
We would like to see a spring game similar to how Michigan played them in the past. Let seniors draft players and even coaches. Then play a regulation game, not a glorified scrimmage like we witnessed this year, and under Coach Carr.
This is the way many teams handle spring games and is also what helps Ohio State attract 92,000+ fans every spring. It helps create excitement about the program.
