Mailbag question: Lalota, Jones, Banks, and Patterson
Hey guys,
Your blog is my favorite sports website. I loved your ranking post.
What position do you see Lalota playing in a few years? Would he have decent upside at that position?
How likely are Banks and Patterson to get fifth years?
Did Teric Jones play any defense in high school? He looks more like a safety than a slot or back to me.
Thanks.
Joe F.

Thanks for the questions and comment.
Teric Jones played outside linebacker in high school with mixed success. His learning curve at safety would be very long, he spent most of his time on offense. When on defense he played at line of scrimmage, almost like at point with defensive ends. We see Teric in the slot receiver position at Michigan.
At this time we would expect to see Patterson and Banks offered a fifth year by the Michigan staff. Defensive line is a very thin position and experienced depth will be at a premium especially next year when they lose B. Graham.
Lalota played spinner / quick hybrid defensive end / outside linebacker position this spring. In our opinion this was mostly do to need. Thing that surprised us was Lalota's size.
At this time he is not a very big and that limits his position possibilities. His best position would probably be offensive guard in this offense and defensive end on defense. He has the ability to a solid player for Michigan. We went against the grain and most people last year when we believe he would be better suited for the offensive line so we will have to see what happens with him in a few years.

That offer to Lolata seemed like a real stretch didn't it? I mean is Michigan in that bad a position after last year to need to offer a kid with his limited talent and size?
ReplyDeleteLalota was a 5* recruit last summer (he dropped to a 4* later). I'm the first to say that looking at stars is stupid, but still, you don't end up a 5* recruit with "limited talent and size".
ReplyDeleteHe is about 6-5 and 235/240 pounds....that's pretty normal for a true freshman DE. He does need a redshirt year to bulk up, he can play "spinner" and be of help to the team but would be better served by sitting out this year.
ReplyDeleteRoh can play "spinner" and is more of Weakside DE, while Lalota is expected to fill out to about 265/270 pounds and be a Strongside DE (he might not be a quick twitch guy like Roh) a couple of years down the line!
For him to be on OL, he needs to pack in way more weight, and he might not have the body type to carry anything more than 265/270 without sacrificing athleticism!
