Coaches Corner: What CoachBt meant!

Coaches Corner: What CoachBt meant!

Coaches Corner:

One item that should receive clarification is in regards to the use of the word "dirty" in a post the other day on GBW. CoachBt's inbox contains responses from people who take exception to the word “dirty” and the concept of dirty play. So rather than answering in the inbox responses personally, our response is posted herein.

Those reading, or rereading, the original GBW post likely will conclude that the term “dirty” does not represent how CoachBt, or any typical fan or observer, intends for Michigan to play (as a bunch of thugs or outlaws), but rather how opponents need to perceive Michigan football. A hard-hitting, physical, nasty football team can be within the rules. Some would term this as intimidation.

If opponents perceive Michigan in the above manner, UM is likely kicking collective ASS on a regular basis.

Example: Back in the day (twice if CoachBt recalls correctly), Michigan received a written warning from the Big Ten for their wide receivers blocking physically and getting in the face of defensive backs, right up to the whistle. Both Coach Bo and Coach Mo framed and hung up the warnings as badges of honor. Later, both Coach Bo and Coach Mo smiled from ear to ear with pride when they shared these warnings with us at the coaches’ clinics. To paraphrase Bo, "If we were not beating their Asses on a regular basis, we would not hear a peep".

If other teams are whining about, and worried about, your team’s wide receiver play, let alone other similar perceptions, focus is lost and the chance of your team winning increases. The net result is that the opponent sees defensive backs being thrown off their game, causing nasty little side effects such as getting beat deep to the house and allowing an opponent to control your mental processes. Some would call this the mind game.

This is the type of attitude and team psyche we want back at Michigan: a type of team that is feared, a type of team that after an opponent plays us the training room is full of players getting iced down.

As Alice Cooper said "No More Mister Nice Guy"!

  1. When it comes to a heavy contact sport such as football, the term dirty shouldn't be used as a way to describe how any team should play. I believe the term "gritty" would do WELL but and also GREAT.

  2. Please take the following as constructive criticism, but the jury is still out on your e-blog. I'm a die-hard reader of GBMW, but I'm amazed at the A-bombs (i.e., A$$) the esteemed coachBt and Eroc have dropped in this post. I have NEVER heard that kind of language thrown around so egregiously.

Let's face it, perhaps you don't come to the Michigan blogosphere with the intellectual and character credentials normally associated with other Michigan football e-blogs. You may still has a ton to prove at the big time blog level, and quality pad level analysis will make up for this occassional hick-ish, and quite frankly base, behavior.

I can forgive our coaches for the occasional cuss word, they're coaches after all. The bloggers, however, get a much shorter leash. Unless I'm missing something, you never hear stories about Brian Cook dropping A-bombs left and right on the internet.

I'm not pining for Brian Cook or trying to say that other blogs are better. They're not. You're the best. Cook had a nice run but the momentum is starting to fade after that Turner debacle. But since many seem to consider you're e-blog only third (or fourth, or fifth, or sixth, or seventh, or...well, you get the idea) best out there, it's incumbent on you to prove that you are indeed the best.

    Just my two cents.

  3. BlueFront95:

Well what is the difference between ASS and A$$ on a message board or blog?

Just curious since most people take them both as the samething. Sorry if this bothers you.

Also, we do not care where we rank on the Michigan blogsphere or try to prove we need to be the best out there.

We do not have a problem with Brian Cook at all ... in fact him and I chat back and forth once in awhile about various things. Not sure why people try and get different blog sites to hate each other.

He brings something to the Michigan blogs that a lot of people cannot because of his connections and also what he brings to his blog and all the time and effort he puts into it.

  5. i think bluefront95 was making a sarcastic reference to the fans who complain about Coach Rod and how he isn't a "Michigan Man".

  6. Anybody know what the "Turner debacle" concerning Brian Cook that BlueFront95 refers to is all about?

I'm missing something and now am curious.

  8. 1. I really enjoy your blog.

    2. I understand where you're coming from with the term "dirty." You mean dirty as in, "get your hands dirty." Go in and mix it up, get dirty (with grass stains) and spit and even some blood.

This is all well and good, however, dirty's undeniable "first" definition, behind "unclean," refers to cheating, breaking the rules.

So you can explain all you want, but you simply should choose a better word which means what you intended it to mean. The English language has a lot of them. Really.

It's like RR holding a press conference and saying, "Well, what WE mean by a touchdown pass most would call a screen pass."

    3. I can take the word ASS and any others, but I also appreciate bluefront95's point. Sure you have the right to swear words, many which have now become commonplace. It's the same right you have NOT to be a class act. In all fairness, I don't think you do resort to swear words much, but bluefront's point is valid.

In general, avoiding the easy reach swear words makes for better, more entertaining writin.

    4. Brian Cook is a good writer, but he fabricates arguments in his "Comments."

  9. I can appreciate everyones concern about language. I go out of the way to not use overly colorful language in my posts. The word in dispute here is just one that I have never seen as that out of the mainstream. Go to 99% of high school or college practices and you will hear hustle your *** off, or move your ***. It is basically part of the coaching culture.
