Mailbag question: Boo Boo

Mailbag question: Boo Boo

I wanted to get your opinion on one thing, and that thing is Boubacar Cissoko. I have defended Boubacar as a very good cornerback who was simply outmatched by future NFL’er Floyd in the ND game. I have said that he has the talent, but that he is young and still learning, not to mention injured. Is this justifiable? He got toasted a few times vs. ND, both against G. Tate and M. Floyd. Did he appear much improved to you against EMU? I know you guys as well are big Boo Boo fans, so where do you stand on this?

Thanks for the question.

Boubacar "Boo Boo" Cissoko has a ton of talent, good speed, super quick feet, and will hit you. He plays with no fear.

Right now Boo Boo’s biggest problem is fundamentals.

He has a tendency of losing sight of the wide receiver. He also gives up deep leverage. These are very correctable things that with experience and a willingness to improve will naturally get better.

Close observation from the Eastern Michigan game film illustrated a particular play, where Eastern Michigan was near the end zone and threw the ball to the sidelines right at the goal line and Boo Boo actually turned the wrong way (he turned inside) and the wide receiver went out to the end zone and luckily the wide receiver dropped the ball before Boo Boo could get there.

Remember one thing about playing cornerback, there is a must for having a short memory and growing very thick skin. A corner must also keep up his confidence; if he gets down on himself the other teams will just keep attacking.

A case in point is the Notre Dame game where the ND staff saw a weakness and kept going back to it over and over again. Other teams will watch game films and see if Boo Boo has improved. All teams look for weaknesses that they can exploit and try and scheme the best plays against the greatest weakness to create mismatches and create big gains.

It has been implied by the Michigan coaching staff and others that Boo Boo is playing hurt, but will continue to play. One thing in Boo Boo’s favor: he is a tough, never back down type of player. But attitude, while alone necessary, is not totally sufficient regarding the making of a great cornerback.

  1. Thanks for answering my question, guys. Yeah, I saw that dropped TD pass where BooBoo was in coverage from the EMU game. When he gave up that goal line TD to Golden Tate, I was astonished he gave him such a cushion. It seems BooBoo's goal line D has something to be desired.

Thankfully, we do not face many more teams this year with a terrifying air attack (Penn State, maybe), so I don't see Boubacar getting exploited again. Who'd have thunk that this point in the season, I'm more impressed with our safety play than Boubacar's play.
