Mailbag question: How Michigan is using the Tight Ends

Mailbag question: How Michigan is using the Tight Ends

With the evolution of the TE currently going on at Michigan, which has all but replaced the 2nd slot WR in most formations, do you see Michigan dialing back our recruiting when it comes to the slot?

Thanks and GO BLUE!

Thanks for the question and a great question in our opinion.

In fact such a great question that we are not sure we can give anything but a 100% educated guess.

From the recruiting list we are seeing it appears Michigan will be staying with two slot formations a majority of the time.

That is not to say Michigan will not recruit or use tight ends after Kevin Koger, M. Webb, and B. Moore leave.

It appears that the Michigan staff prefers, at this time, to stay with their traditional personnel groupings. It is very possible that Michigan could pick up the tight end recruiting again in the near future when our current tight ends eligibility starts to wane.

Recruiting lists and our contacts do not currently mention tight ends. Maybe some of the earlier mentioned tight ends that were once reported as looking at Michigan would now favorably view how the staff is using players like Koger and give Michigan a second or third look.

Will this happen in the 2010 class, or will we have to wait until the 2011 recruiting class to see a tight end signing? There were several good tight ends from the state of Ohio that were looking at Michigan and decided to go elsewhere so maybe someone will inquire to see if Michigan is open to a tight end commitment in this class.

  1. So it appears that something which has proen to be a great offensive asset, one that can help open up the offense, and bnefit a crambling QB with an extra passing outlet, will not be a part of UM' offensive future under Roriguez? That is disappointing.
