Mailbag question: What happened to Vlad?

Hello,

Within a few weeks it appears our safety depth has changed. Vlad Emilien went from a potential starter to nowhere to be found. Now, Jordan Kovacs is playing. What happened to Vlad??

Thanks for the question.

We are hearing that Vlad had/has an injury. It has not been confirmed, at this time, by the coaches or any UM officials. We believe it was a tweak awhile ago and is getting close to contributing on the field soon.

Vlad was doing very well during spring practice and also the summer workouts. He certainly, by his progress and by the depth chart, was in line to see some playing time, but might have fell behind. Hopefully, Vlad returns soon to contribute.

We have heard he is very close and they have to decide on what to do now.

There is a point, however, where Vlad and the coaches may believe it to be more beneficial to red-shirt rather than burn a year for a few plays.
