Mailbag question: All White uniforms

Mailbag question: All-White uniforms?

Hello,

I have been hearing rumors that Michigan will roll out the "All-White" uniforms for the Iowa game, any truth to that or is this just fans speculating right now.

What do you think of the move and also what is your recommendation for other changes they can do to the uniforms. Anything you wish to say about the home jersey?

Thanks for the question.

Well yes, all the chatter is speculation right now that the team will wear white pants and white jerseys for the game. But where there is smoke there is fire. Will they who knows until gameday.

Frankly GBMW does not really care about what UM does about the away jersey/uniform, but the home jersey/pants should never be touched.
I do have a few suggestions though. It seems like Michigan is trying to always tweak the away jersey and to me that means that they have not found the right combination yet.
Too many teams right now are changing jerseys, either for a different look or so fans will buy the new merchandise, such as Oregon with their five different uniforms this year.
To me I think the away jersey is getting too "busy" and needs to be simple, such as Alabama away jersey. That is just a classic look. Also, if you look at the Michigan home jersey, which most believe is one of the best, if not the best, in college football, it is really simple. A friend of mine told me this: "The testament to a great design is how long it lasts. Whether the subject is a logo, a building or a uniform. Sure, there may be a tweak or streamlined version here or there, but the design essentially remains intact."

Why do you think Oregon's change every year?

Why not have the same type of design for the away jersey as UM does for the home jersey? It seems like the busier it gets the more it doesn't look like a Michigan jersey. I do not understand why the away jersey needs a swoosh on the side, or the piping on the shoulder pads, the blue stripe around the arms and collar, or the maize around the numbers.

Why not have a simple white jersey, with blue numbers sewn on the front and back and also on both shoulder pad sides with the player numbers, so the away uniform would be just like the home jersey.

Now, let us continue on to the pants discussion. It does not bother me what color UM wears on the road. Again, there is no reason to touch the home design. The only thing I would like is if the uniforms would just have a simple pant, no stripes, no design, no claw marks, or any other type of markings on them. Just make the uniforms all white, all blue, just like the home pants with the Adidas logo on one side, with the "M" on the other side.

As far as maize as a color choice for a home jersey, I really am not in favor of this for several reasons. I have seen several designs of different teams uniforms with maize pants and maize jerseys (or yellow) and did not like the concept - too much maize in my opinion.

If UM wants to add maize to the away jersey with blue pants or white pants then fine, but again this would have to be worked out with the home team since most times the away team is in white.

Again, to me the simpler you make the jersey the better it looks, along with the cleaner the look the better the look, just like the famous UM helmets. Why cover up the greatest looking helmet with ten-cent stickers? There simply is no need.

  1. I concur 100%. The away unis are not of any consequence. The home unis are fine as is. If you have something that people are comfortale with, why change it? Also, it can become expensive to change unis every year.
