Mailbag question: Getting pressure on the quarterback

Mailbag question: Getting pressure on the quarterback

Why aren't we getting pressure on the quarterback? That to me seems like the biggest problem for this defense.

Is it just not getting enough pressure, sending enough guys, or is it the defensive scheme we are playing not letting us get pressure on opponents.

Thanks for the question.

Michigan has only one true pass-rushing threat at this time, B. Graham.

With teams doubling and even tripling Graham at times, it is up to the other linemen to pick up the slack. So far they have not done this consistently and this lack of pressure has caused some problems.

Michigan's defense in our opinion is just not athletic or explosive enough to make things happen. This is the same problem the offense had until Michigan added some of the type of athletes necessary to play the fast spread type of football.

One of the things we have noticed and posted multiple times is that Michigan is recruiting better overall athletes to play the type of defense Coach Robinson and Coach Rod want. Until these explosive, athletic players arrive, or get the experience necessary, Michigan will have problems defending in space and generating a consistent pass rush.

The good news is players like Roh, JT Turner, Vlad, the Talbott brothers, and even W. Campbell are the type of explosive athletes it takes to play an aggressive pressure type defense. It is just going to take some time for them to develop.
