Mailbag question: Going for two?
Mailbag question: Going for two?
Should coach Rod have gone for 2 at the end of the Michigan State game, instead of playing for overtime?
I know decisions like this are always second guessed, but I was wondering if that (going for 2) would have been better, especially considering how long the defense was on the field against Michigan State?

Thanks for the question.
You are indeed correct; looking at tough decisions that can be logically supported either way is 20/20 hindsight.
Yes, the Michigan State defense had been on the field for long time and was definitely reeling.
However, Forcier was definitely hurting and getting him a blow on the bench and before the overtime made sense to us.
Why take a gamble on one play when you have been stopping Michigan State regularly in the fourth quarter and the offense had just scored twice in the last five minutes in a game in which Michigan did not seem to be in the game at all until the fourth quarter?
UM also has a solid field goal kicker.
In this case we would have supported Coach Rod’s decision regardless, he and his staff are on the field and have a better feel for what is happening then us watching the game at home or in the stands.
This is one of those situations where there was not a right or wrong decision, in our opinion, and second-guessing, like the decision, could go either way depending on the outcome of the game, play, etc…
Sometimes when a team has fought back to even the score, taking away a chance to win can cut the heart and soul out of a team’s psyche. The coaches gave the team a chance to win and the guys almost stole one.

I disagree. Giving Forcier a "blow" also gave the MSU defense a much needed "blow," before which they were reeling after being scored upon twice in two consecutive drives. Forcier was hot, tired but running on adrenaline. He was in "the zone" which the short stoppage of play before overtime got him out of and also allowed MSU's defense to regroup.
In this case, I say "Strike while the iron's hot."
