Mailbag question: MSU wanted it more

Mailbag question: MSU wanted it more

Does it seem like MSU wanted the game more? It also seems like MSU plays with more emotion in this game and "wants it more" than Michigan. It seems like that has been the case for the last several years and somehow in the past we lucked in getting the win (such as the Braylon game, the Mario catch at MSU, etc.)

Does MSU understand this rivalry more and have more hatred in this rival game?

Thanks for the question.

We agree that Michigan State played with more emotion and passion.
They also played with a purpose and edge that Michigan did not match.

This has been true for some time. Many of MSU’s players wanted to go to Michigan and make the case that Michigan screwed up by not offering them. This same occurrence happens with players from Ohio that attend and play for Michigan and have either been overlooked or offered after committing to Michigan. The spurned have something to prove.

Coach Perles really pushed this angle and we do not expect this approach to change any time soon. Coach Dantonio will certainly use the "disrespect" or no respect angle in this rivalry. Maybe after losing two in a row to Michigan State, UM may target this game as a must win next year.

Michigan State has eight commits from the state of Michigan already and is looking to add more. They also have a couple of Ohio kids who favored Michigan at some point, they are the next generation of Michigan State players with a chip on the shoulder to show Michigan screwed up.

Fair or unfair, at this time with the rebuilding of this Michigan program, Coach Rod is 1-4 in the three big rival games (Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan State). This trend needs to be turned around sooner than later.

Michigan fans were complaining about how Michigan State was talking before, but just wait, now with MSU beating Michigan two years in a row along with how the media will treat this victory for Michigan State, especially in the local newspapers and television stations.
