Mailbag question: Tough loss
Mailbag question: Tough loss
After a loss like the one Michigan had is it tougher to get ready for the next game or easier?
Seems like we shouldn't of even had a chance to be in that MSU game, but somehow the Wolverines were, so is it more heartbreaking to lose like they did or would it have been better just to be handed our butts like the first 3 plus quarters?

Thanks for the question.
Each team has a different mental make up and will react differently, especially to adversity. We know that sounds like coach speak or a cliché, but it is true and we all will not really know how the team reacts until next week’s game.
We have a sentiment that this team has a chip on its shoulder and is out to prove something and should be fine.
A key to success next week is to get off to a fast start. If this indeed happens, confidence building and the associated team morale will increase. Momentum for a team is huge and when achieved this helps in tough situations. There already is a clear difference in mental outlook between last year and this year.
If team gets off to a slow start teams confidence can quickly erode. Already fans are complaining about what is wrong with this team, one way or another. If the losses continue this predictable phenomenon will only get worse.
If team loses a couple of close games, coming off a 3-9 season it very well could have a negative effect on the team’s confidence going down the stretch.
The tough thing is Michigan is going to play Iowa at Iowa in a night game, and this is a game both teams want/need to win. It is a game, like so many in the Big Ten that can be used to measure a team’s progress and standing.
The good thing about coming off the Michigan State loss is it should not be tough to get this team focused and get them prepared to face an undefeated Iowa team that went into Penn State and won in the Big Ten opener.
This will be a huge game for both programs. For Michigan a win would show the team can get back on track and for Iowa to show it can contend for the Big Ten title and stay undefeated.
