Mailbag question: Who is responsible for tight end coverage
Mailbag question: Who is responsible for tight end coverage
Who is responsible to defend the TE or the slashing WR? It seemed like every time Iowa needed a big play, or a first down, they would run the waggle play with great success. What defender is responsible for the offensive players slipping out?
Dave K.

Thanks for the question.
The answer depends on the coverage and the side of the field the play is run towards. On the two touchdown passes the free safety, Mike Williams, bit on the short route and did not keep proper deep leverage.
One thing Michigan is not getting that would help is a solid knock (jam) on tight ends at the line of scrimmage, or rerouting the tight ends underneath. There clearly is work to be done in this area.
