Mailbag question: Brandon Graham playing the wrong position?

Mailbag question: Brandon Graham playing the wrong position?

GBMW,

I think B. Graham has played great this year, but do you think he played in the wrong position? I think he would have been better off playing where Roh played this year standing up? What do you think? A position where you could move him around all over the field so they couldn't lock on him and be able to scheme around him.

He is probably going to have to play standing up once he goes to the NFL.

What do you think?

Jim R.

We agree with you that Brandon Graham likely will need to play another position at the next level, but we are not sure if that would help this team by playing his best position. We simply do not have anybody that can do what he does when rushing the passer.

We think Brandon Graham's natural position is outside linebacker in a Pittsburgh ‘ or New England Patriot’s 3-4 defense.

The problem with him playing the "Quick" for Michigan is there are too many times the quick is in coverage. We have seen Craig Roh a lot in pass coverage and we believe with the pass rush UM has been getting; we need Brandon Graham always rushing the passer for this defense to be remotely effective.

Brandon Graham has been Michigan's only consistent pass rusher. Moving him to a position where he is not rushing the passer would truly weaken an already poor pass rush. Unfortunately, this is the plain and simple truth.
