Mailbag Question: Coach Shafer back next year?
Hello:
How do you guys handle all these questions all the time and actually answer them with intelligent responses even when people slam your thoughts/ideas.
Okay enough butt kissing.
My question is do you guys think Coach Shafer will be back next year and do you think he is the major problem?
If he is not the problem then what is it or a combination of things?
David

Thanks for the question. We believe that Coach Shafer was not in charge of the defense yesterday.
Is he coming back? At this point, it would probably better suit Coach Shafer and Michigan if the two go in different directions.
As with most things, football comprises more than one issue. You must have enough QUALITY football players. Since this spring, we have been harping on the fact that Michigan needs talent, not just bodies, and we need to recruit better, especially on defense.
Coach Rod also has to do better job of assembling a defensive staff. As we've said before, this does not seem like a good mix of coaches.

Is it both Eroc and Coachbt's view that Shafer be canned?
Many times you only get one shot to make a first impression.
Schafer had 5 starters back from a UM team that finished 7th in the league in total defense.
Taylor, Jamison, Johnson and B. Graham were the core of that returning 5. Trent was the other.
This should have been enough to sport at least a competitive defense. I'm not convinced that any one defensive set wins more games than the other. 5-2, 4-3 and 3-4 D sets have all been very, very successful at the college level. I think Schafer is a good coach, but I don't think he had a choice of his own assistants, nor do I believe he had free reign to run the defense as he wanted. Normally a 4-3 set would do well this year. But there are 3 and 4 star UM seniors falling to their knees, missing tackles and not wrapping. How does it come to this?
RR shouldn't let Schafer go unless he's willing to look at some of the b.s. playcalling of his bossom buddy Cal Magee or at his own choices and preparations during the last 9 games.
Give it time. Work diligently, but be patient. Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State all went through the ringer. It's just UM's turn this year and likely next. Michigan's best years of college football lie ahead.
