Mailbag question: Any other receiver to move position?

I would like to start by saying this is the first thing I check every morning. It is fun but challenging to get exciting for Michigan football in the heart of ND land. Keep up the good work. I have two questions:

First a football question: There has been a lot of talk that one position where depth (number of bodies) may not be an issue is at the receiver spot. T. Jones appears to have made the transition from offense to defense fairly easily. Are there any other receivers that could/should make this move to improve defensive depth? It appears that recruiting WR’s is easier for Michigan than S/CB’s. Obviously with how Kelvin has performed, that is not a move you would want to make, but why didn’t Coach Rod push for that at the beginning of camp?

Second question is a general Michigan question: Which 2009-10 Michigan sports team will be considered the best of the year? Also which team will surprise the most people?

I guess my two questions grew into four.

Michigan does have a good numbers situation at split end, but we think running back has the best depth of any position.

Michigan needs to have adequate numbers at split end because Michigan uses multiple wide receiver sets a large majority of the time.

So, moving another split end is not as easy as it might appear. If any further receivers were moved, Cam Gordon to safety would currently make the most sense, at least in our opinion. That is why every year it is important to recruit team needs as much as good players. There is a need to balance out every other class and compliment each class back to back.

As far as the other Michigan sports, wow, this might be a tougher question that demands more than just providing a shallow, surface-scratching type of answer. That is one of the neat things about following the University of Michigan. It is not just football and basketball that demonstrate excellence. Most Michigan teams are very successful.

The answer requires an analysis of the usual Michigan teams that have demonstrated consistent quality, such as Softball, Hockey, Volleyball, Women’s/Men’s Gymnastics, Men’s Swimming and Diving, Water Polo, and Wrestling.

Softball should be loaded again this year, losing only two players on the roster and returning starting pitchers Nikki Nemitz and Jordan Taylor. They should make another run for the Women’s College World Series under Coach Carol Hutchins. And maybe this year the ladies will repeat what they did in 2005.

The Women’s Gymnastics team missed the NCAA Championships for the first time in the last sixteen years. That snapped the nation's fourth-longest streak of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. They should be very good again under Coach Beverly Plocki.

Coach Berenson's hockey program is usually at the top of the CCHA and making it to the Frozen Four is almost a mainstay for his program. This will likely be a tougher road this year, but the Wolverines have many young talented players.

We also predict the wrestling team under Coach Joe McFarland will surprise many people, despite losing Steve Luke.

The surprise team, in our opinion, might be the Field Hockey program, which has struggled the last couple of years. But under Marcia Pankratz the program once again will try to bring that magic back and make it into the NCAA championships.

Michigan has many great athletic programs and we apologize for not mentioning them all. This question reinforces the saying “It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine.”

Mailbag question: What is your take on adding another team to the Big Ten conference or should they?

Have not seen your guys take on the JoePa and "needing to add another team to the Big Ten conference" and also what Delaney has said about it.

What is your take about adding another team? Do you favor it? Would it help the conference? Would we compete with the SEC now?

Also what are the bad things with adding another team if any?

Do you favor the 11 teams now and could they tweak it better? Add more weeks? Play more teams, etc.?

Interesting to hear your side of this argument that has been debated on the message boards for awhile now?

Here is the biggest problem we see with adding a twelve team to the Big Ten conference.

If you divide conference into two divisions (such as a East / West) with Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan all in one division you have the biggest draws and toughest teams all beating the crap out of each other. Who are the other two teams that get placed with those four? How do you divide it fairly enough to where all the conference teams agree without feeling like they have been thrown into the tougher division?

Do you separate Ohio State and Michigan? What happens to "The Game"? If both sides agree they still want to play on the last weekend of the regular season, is it fair that they would possibly have a rematch in the conference championship game? Does it cheapen the rivalry if the regular season matchup loses its luster? There are a lot of questions, and right now nobody really knows the answers. One other thing to consider is if both Ohio State and Michigan are having good seasons -- would the loser in the conference championship game be out of the BCS? Factor into that scenario that a non-participant in the championship game could have just one loss, as with Texas and Oklahoma last year. Would the one-loss team jump over a two-loss loser of the Big Ten Championship game?

Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan are guaranteed to fill their stadiums and bring in big television ratings. This is important to the conference and to college football.

We do think that The Big Ten conference, with eleven teams, needs to come up with a way to stage a conference championship game in early December -- but there is the 12-team rule for conference championship games. One alternative is to somehow extend the season into the first week of December with bye weeks. The extra exposure is good for the conference (the Big Ten falls off the radar with its early conclusion to the schedule). The extra practices would be great for Big Ten teams as well, especailly if they are headed to bowl games. That would be a great first step to gaining on the other BCS conferences.

We think they could keep it the way it is (with 11 teams) and just play every team in the conference (Ten Big Ten games -- two non-conference games) to claim a true champion of the Big Ten conference. But money is involved, and most of the Big Ten conference teams do not like this idea because they believe they need to play easier teams to get to the magical six wins to be eligible for a bowl. Playing more games in conference would make that goal harder to achieve. Our take is that if you cannot get to .500 in conference play, you don't belong in a bowl anyway.

The logical choice, and one the Big Ten should wait for, is Notre Dame. They bring more than football to the table. They bring prestige, ratings, and a rabid national fan base. The addition of Notre Dame gives the Big Ten more national appeal beyond Michigan - Ohio State.

Since Notre Dame turned down the Big Ten before the only other teams in the area we would feel comfortable with would be Pitt, Cincinnati, and Missouri. The problems with teams such as Syracuse, Rutgers, and those type of teams people discuss are their locations. The Big Ten is a Midwest based conference and by adding another eastern team you would really stretch the boundaries of the conference.

This is more than just a football conference. Most of the conference travel is done by bus for most of the sports teams (Michigan who has twenty-five sports programs), so the desire to add a team must factor in the extra cost to each university for each sport and game.

Think of it this way: One weekend Iowa plays Ohio State in baseball, the next weekend Rutgers, the following weekend Penn State -- the travel cost, especially in these tough economic times, would really put a strain not only on the universities, but also the fan bases that would want to travel to these events. It is one thing for football and possibly basketball, but a completely different story for other sporting events.

Again we think Notre Dame is the best choice, but we're not sure they will ever want to be part of a conference in which they are not the "big fish." They would be on equal footing with Ohio State and Michigan. Do they want to admit they are on a level playing field as those teams and admit they are not elite anymore? Penn State used to be a "big fish" before they came into the Big Ten -- now they are one of the "other teams" in the Big Ten conference in most sports.

NCAA Titles by Gall, Ofili Help Michigan Finish Seventh

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Juniors Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) earned national titles Saturday (June 14) to lead the University of Michigan women's track and field team to seventh place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium. Ofili repeated in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.84, while Gall won the 800-meter run in 2:03.91.

Junior co-captain Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington HS) and senior Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) also earned All-America honors, with Wade placing third in the heptathlon (3,560 points) and Edwards finishing sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:15.00).

Ofili took control of the 100m hurdles final from the start as she and LSU's Nickiesha Wison separated from the pack over the first three hurdles. Ofili extended her lead over Wilson (13.00) by 0.16 of a second over the reaming seven hurdles to secure her third NCAA individual title and tally 10 points for Michigan.

Ofili is the first U-M sprinter in program history to win consecutive NCAA outdoor titles and claim All-America honors in back-to-back seasons. She is also the first Wolverine to win three consecutive national championships (two outdoor, one indoor) in school history.

Gall, who earned her third 800m outdoor All-America honor of her career, Gall began in the middle of the pack and was between fourth and fifth place throughout most of the race. She moved into the third at the 500m mark and starting kicking ahead with 150 meters to go. Heading into the straightaway Gall was second to Becky Horn (2:04.67) of Western Michigan before a late spurt with 50 meters remaining separated her from the rest of the pack.

Gall is the first Wolverine to claim the NCAA outdoor 800-meter run title and the first one to claim three consecutive All-America honors in the event, adding to her fourth-place finish in 2006 and fifth-place effort last year. Gall's victory earned another 10 points for the Wolverines.

Wade, who was third in the heptathlon after the four events contested Friday, solidified her position with a strong performance in Saturday's first event, the long jump, tying for fifth with a mark of 19-9 that was good for 856 points. Wade held a 13-point edge over fourth-place Brianne Theisen of Oregon entering the final event, the 800-meter run. Theisen passed Wade at the 600m mark, but Wade was able to stay with her pace and kicked past Theisen down the homestretch to finish sixth (2:21.60) to Theisen's seventh (2:22.73).

Wade's third-place performance marks the highest heptathlon finish in school history and earned six points for the Wolverines. Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State won the title for the fourth straight year.

In her final collegiate track race, Edwards began the 1,500m run in the back of the pack and remained in eighth and ninth for most of the race before starting her move at the 300m mark. With 100 meters remaining Edwards had moved up to fifth place, before dropping back to sixth down the homestretch. Edwards' finish added three points to U-M's tally.

Michigan extended to four its streak of top-10 finishes at NCAA championships over the past two seasons. The Wolverines were ninth at the 2007 indoor meet and had program-best finishes of third at the 2007 outdoor event and third at the 2008 indoor championships before their seventh-place performance this week.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The University of Michigan finished fourth in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a school-record time Saturday (June 14) on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium on Jim Duncan Track.

Junior Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), senior co-captain Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS), senior/junior Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) and fifth-year senior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) posted a time of 3:04.64 to earn five team points, putting the Wolverines in a eight-way tie for 42nd place in the final team standings.

After a good opening leg by Barnes, Wechter received a clean exchange and maintained third place with the lead pack until the final 50 meters. Harmsen received the second exchange of the race and held off an early surge by Texas to maintain fourth place.

Waithe closed in on the lead group around the final bend and held off a late surge by Northern Iowa (3:04.97) to secure fourth place, U-M's best finish in the 4x400m relay since 1972. The Wolverines shattered the old school record (3:05.73) by more than a second.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team won the team title at the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, accumulating 92 points on the final day Sunday (May 18) to overtake defending champion Wisconsin. Junior Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) and senior/junior Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) each won an individual title and contributed to a relay championship to lead the Wolverines charge on the final day at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium.

The Wolverines accumulated 129 points to finish ahead of Wisconsin (119) and Ohio State (100) and end their 25-year title drought at the Big Ten outdoor meet. Michigan's last Big Ten outdoor championship came in 1983 at the end of a four-year championship run (1980-83).

Harris began the day by electrifying the crowd with his burst of speed on the home stretch of the 4x100-meter relay. Harris received the final exchange from fifth-year senior Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) and was in the middle of the pack. But Harris blazed past everyone to give Michigan its first 4x100-meter relay title since 1982, posting a regional qualifying time of 40.26. Harris and Waithe were joined with freshman Troy Woolfolk (Sugarland, Texas/Dulles HS) and junior Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS).

Harris also claimed Michigan's first Big Ten 200-meter dash crown since 1982 with a career-best and regional time of 20.75. Like in the relay Harris was tied for the lead until he reached the home stretch and out-kicked the second-place finisher by 0.18 a second, earning 10 points.

Harris and Woolfolk also ran in the 100-meter dash, finishing third (10.36) and sixth (10.58), respectively, and accounting for nine points. Woolfolk's time was a new personal record.

Harmsen won the 400-meter hurdles with a regional time of 51.12, leading a 19-point Michigan output with three Wolverines in the top five of the event. Harmsen is the first Wolverine hurdler to win the Big Ten title in the 400-meter hurdles since Neil Gardner did in 1997. Freshman Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) and junior Rob Fiorillo (Holly, Mich./Holly HS) both posted career-best times to finish fourth and fifth with times of 52.53 and 52.54, respectively. The hurdles effort gave Michigan its first lead of the championships, and it was one they would not relinquish.

Waithe, co-captain Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS) and Barnes finished third (46.82), fourth (47.13) and fifth (47.22) in the 400-meter dash, earning 16 points. Waithe and Wechter both earned NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying times in the event.

Redshirt freshman Nicholas McCampbell (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.43. McCampbell was sitting in fourth before stumbling over the final hurdle.

Junior Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering HS) took fourth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.73. Switzer stayed in the middle of the slow pack before kicking at the 200-meter mark to finish 0.63 of a second behind Minnesota's Hans Storvick (1:50.06). Switzer's performance was good for five points.

Junior/sophomore Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York HS) finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time 4:06.02. The pace of the race was very slow and tactical, as the lead group contained four Wisconsin runners. McNamara ran with the lead group as nobody broke free from the tactic in the event. Samuel Borchers of Penn State won the event but was still 16 seconds off a regional time.

Barnes, Wechter, Harmsen and Waithe sealed the team title by winning the 4x400-meter relay with a regional time of 3:08.39. Waithe closed the door on the event and meet the same way Harris did earlier, outkicking the opposition down the home stretch. The first-place performance marked U-M's first 4x400-meter relay title since 1978 and brought the final team total to 129 points.

After a two-week hiatus, U-M will send its contingent of 14 regional qualifiers to the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 30-31 in Fayetteville, Ark. Events are slated to begin Friday, May 30, at 11 a.m. CDT with the hammer throw.
