A letter from a viewer: First trip to the Big House

Posted at 4:00pm -- 1/11/2010

GBMW received this post recently.

This is a good time of the year to share a story about his or her first trip to the Big House. And so we offer up another first visit story, this one from Jason R. of Tennessee. Again, if you wish to share, feel free to do so. By the way, Jason, we feel your pain being in SEC country, but that just might be a little better than being surrounded by the faithful that follow The Ohio State University. We also thank you for the nice comment. It is the primary purpose of this site to provide easy to access and easy to follow information about Michigan football, a common interest for all who read.

I read a post to you this morning talking about someone's first trip to the Big House. I thought I would share mine with you. I lived in Jackson, MI for the first 10 years of my life, and that is where my lifelong love for UM was born. I never had the chance to go to a game while I lived there. I moved to Tennessee and have lived there ever since. In 1996, my grandmother secured a couple of tickets to the Minnesota Homecoming game. I drove approximately 500 miles on the Friday before the game. Game-time was 12:00 and I got there at about 9:00. My cousin wanted to go around and tailgate, but I was too excited to see the stadium. So, two hours before the game there I was in my seat, and it was just “me and the Big House.” I am not going to lie to you, I think I shed more than one tear at the thought of finally being there. I will never forget that moment as long as I live. UM dominated that day and that just made it sweeter. I hope someday to be able to get back, and take my Dad and my son. It is not easy being a UM fan in SEC country, but we are all diehards. Thank you for your site, and your coverage of UM football. It has become my lifeline to the program.

you must have left Jackson to move to Tennessee back when the goodyear plant burned, had many friends leave around that time.

Glad you made it back to a game at the Big House!!!
