Mailbag question: David Molk

GBMW,

I am writing you today because I have very recently become concerned with the notion of David Molk not being ready to go by the start of the 2010 season. Knee injuries like the one he has takes about a year to come back from (that time table would prevent him from playing against UCONN). Most of the time it takes longer to get back to the level of play prior to the injury.

My thinking is this: Coach Rod has to start fast this season. He needs to beat U CONN and ND, and without D. Molk I don't know if that happens. Plus, we might be starting some younger players on the line, and with D. Molk being the guy who makes the pre-snap reads, his absence could be huge.

How concerned should Michigan fans be?

Sincerely,
Omar H. (ProfessorBlueOmar)

Thanks for the questions, and thanks for stopping at GBMW.

If David Molk is not ready to go, the result is that Michigan will be replacing three, not two, offensive linemen this year. That is not an easy task because the more linemen you have to replace the harder it is to develop the needed cohesion.

Offensive center is also the toughest and key position when a team is zoning. If you are not solid at offensive center, the run blocking will not be as good.

In our opinion the biggest thing about losing D. Molk is the toughness and grit he brings. This is the type of baller who always gives 100% and has the nasty edge to his game we love. This team, at this time, does not have enough physical, nasty players, that is, guys who will rip an opponent’s head off.

Wasn't Molk are best O-linemen? That is what I remember Tom Beaver saying and that is why we struggled so much in the Big Ten?

Don't worry Beaver also said we would be 6-0 next year so no reason to think the o-line will struggle.
