Mailbag question: Isaiah Bell's Development

I was just wondering what your opinion of Isaiah Bell is? It seems like this time a year ago he was being lauded as one of the best safety/linebackers to come out of the All-American games (the under armor game I believe). After a red-shirt season, is he ready to step in and take over Stevie Brown's position? If this is not the position he projects to, where do you see him playing? Also, do you believe he will be mentally and physically prepared to be a big contributor next year based off of what you have heard or seen in practices?

Thanks for your assessment,

Jake

Thanks for the question.

Honestly we will have a much better idea after spring ball. His role for last year was very limited and one year of maturation can make any past evaluation meaningless.

What we are hearing is that I. Bell was moved to linebacker and showed well on the demo squads. Remember, once the season begins, most of the freshmen become tough to evaluate because they spend the majority of their time running opponents’ schemes and less time running the UM system.

Most of the information we share about freshmen that have red-shirted is based on how they impress on the demo squad against Michigan’s first-team units.

This is another example of missing out on the past two bowl games (30 practices total) makes it problematical to evaluate the younger players making it hard to judge what a player can contribute to your system. Those missed practices become missed opportunities for the younger players to get a real shot at practicing your system and showing their stuff to the coaches.
