2010 Michigan Recruiting: Corey Brown -- Running Back

Corey Brown from Cardinal O'Hara high school in Springfield, Pennsylvania.


CoachBt/ErocWolverine quick comments: Could play slot receiver or running back. He shows good quickness, burst and speed. Also has nice hands. He does lose speed on cuts, and bounces things too early. Also could use some added strength and weight.

Maibag question: Spinner and Hybrid positions

What exactly is the "Spinner" position on defense and what type of player plays there? In addition, what does Greg Robinson want to run and where are some of these "hybrids" playing?

Thanks for the question.

Spinner is a hybrid position where a defender can play multiple positions in the defense.

This allows the defense to use multiple fronts without changing personnel.

Michigan is using two types of hybrids at this time.

The first one, called the Spinner, is an outside linebacker/defensive end who will either play outside linebacker in space in a 3-4 look or put a hand on the ground and play defensive end in a 4-3 front.

This type of player/scheme gives a defense a ton of flexibility and makes adapting and adjusting to the offense easier.

The second type of hybrid is similar to what Michigan used in '97 with 4-2-5 scheme. In this case the hybrid is generally a strong safety who steps up and plays like a linebacker.

We will have a better feel for the defense after attending the Michigan Spring Coaches Clinic this weekend and seeing who fits where, along with seeing how Coach Robinson shows his presence on the field.

Mailbag question: Thoughts on Austin White

Hey,

You mentioned previously that you like the Lattimore kid best out of any running back that you have seen.

How does Austin White compare? From what I have heard, Michigan has White as the #1 guy on their board.

Thanks for the question.

We can see why Michigan likes White.

He is a perfect fit, skill-wise, for Coach Rod’s offense. He has excellent lateral movement and a burst that accelerates to top speed quickly. He is an outstanding receiver and excellent cutback runner.

He needs to watch his pad level and does not break many tackles. Also he does not have an outstanding second gear, so he gets caught from behind from time to time.

The whole "#1 on their board" thing we have to question because, in our opinion, there are some more talented kids out there right now, such as Seastrunk and Lattimore that would fit into Coach Rod's offense just as well. Maybe the person you heard this from meant that White has the best chance to end up at Michigan. You have to remember that some sites like to "pump up" certain kids because they have the better chance to land, so it looks better when you supposedly land the #1 kid for a position.

We're not trying to get into a battle here, but it's hard for us to believe he is simply the #1 running back on their "Wish list" -- bar none -- with all those very talented running backs available out there right now, some of who have interest in playing for Michigan.
