Michigan Softball continues to cruise

Michigan Wolverines Softball team (29-3, 4-0 in Big Ten) started off the Big Ten conference this past weekend with sweeping four games against Indiana on Friday and Saturday while beating Purdue twice on Sunday. Michigan will take on Western Michigan on Tuesday and then open up their new Alumni Field ballpark on Wednesday against Bowling Green at the Wilpon Complex.

Michigan is using two young pitchers this year in sophomore Nikki Nemitz (13-1 with a 0.73 ERA) and freshman Jordan Taylor (16-2 with a 0.55 ERA) to lead the softball team which only has three upperclassmen starting (Findlay, Giampaolo and Teddi Ewing). This is one thing that Michigan has missed over the years having two quality pitchers in one season and not solely counting on one pitcher to stand on the mound.

Was this a rebuilding year or just another one of Carol Hutchins “Hutch” reloading team which is lead by a strong sophomore class? I don’t think she ever wants to hear the word rebuilding around her softball program which looks to compete for the Big Ten conference title again in which they have won ten out of the last fifteen titles along with making a run in the NCAA tournament to get back to the Women’s College World Series. Hutch has never had a losing season at Michigan and has finished in the top five every year she has been in charge of the softball program. Michigan has finished either first, second or third in the Big Ten Conference standings in 20 of Hutchins' 23 seasons. Will they do it again this year?

Michigan Softball will be at home on Wednesday against Bowling Green at 4:00pm EDT. Michigan will host the Falcons for its inaugural game at the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex. This will start a five-date home stand with Michigan hosting Iowa in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday (April 4-5) followed by a Sunday doubleheader vs. Illinois (April 6).

After the Bowling Green game Michigan will have its inaugural "Wolverine Softball Meet and Greet" at Oosterbaan Field House (located behind Alumni Field on the first baseline). The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 6 pm EDT. after the completion of Michigan's home opener against the Falcons.

If your in the Ann Arbor area this would be a nice event to attend and show your support for one of the elite college softball programs in the country along with having the chance to see the new ball park first hand. Season tickets are still available as well and can be purchased at http://ev8.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetGroupList?groupCode=GS&linkID=umichse&shopperContext=&caller=&appCode for as low as $20.00, $30.00 and $45.00 for season tickets this year.
