Mailbag question: NCAA rules on playbooks to signed kids

I know Tate Forcier is on campus practicing and studying his playbook for the upcoming season. Is Denard Robinson given a playbook to study at home while waiting to enroll this summer? Is this legal with the NCAA?

It is legal for Michigan to give Robinson a playbook. It is a common practice. We would'nt be surprised if Robinson has both a playbook and a workout journal.

Once their letters of intent are signed, many schools give out workout journals to incoming freshman and they expect them turned in -- well-used -- when the players show up on campus.

In addition, phone calls are allowed, since so players can ask questions about the playbook and learn what's expected of them upon arrival.

Having the playbook and workout journal is nice, but only the beginning. Freshmen will still have a whole lot to learn and get acclimated to. There are things a player can only learn by experience once he arrives on campus: like how everything is actually done at Michigan, how practices and training sessions are run, what the position coach's teaching style is, all the film work that goes into it, etc.
