Michigan Football Tidbits: Thursday Practice Tidbits
We really like Vincent Smith. He is "Barry Sanders" like in terms of his ability to switch directions (not meaning he is, or will be Barry). He runs so smoothly, but packs a little punch. Now, do not go crazy and say, Smith will be as good as Barry Sanders. For now, we're just commenting on his running style. He is very quick and is exciting to watch.
Khoury is a player who keeps playing until he hears the whistle -- and sometimes even a couple seconds afterwards. He is a very competitive kid who definitely does not back down.
We have to temper the glowing reports on Forcier by saying that this year is going to be a huge learning year for him. The simpler they keep it the better. So far, Forcier has done just fine in everything they have asked, including the first controlled scrimmage.
It is early, and last year he was very impressive in spring, but Stonum is starting to stand out in wide receiver group. His t talent is obvious.
Barnum took some snaps at left tackle and left guard, but a wrist injury is preventing him from going full blast.
Again, early on they are working on tackling drills much more than a year ago. During practice Greg Robinson is very animated. He is much more complimentary towards players than I have seen in the past, and he is a stickler for details: even if a player accomplished a drill, if he didn't do it with proper fundamentals, he will do it again.
Mike Cox is getting reps, but noting much else to report. Scrimmage was limited. Saturday could be the first time they have extended scrimmage time.
Expect quarterback play to be better, but this is a quarterback-centered offense when it is running on all cylinders. For at least another year, the quarterback is going to be limited to a support role in the offense. Hopefully, our success will not hinge on quarterback play. Expect our running game and short passing game to be much more efficient.
The offensive line got the edge over the Defense in the first scrimmage, but that was to be expected since they have experience than the defense who is implementing new stuff.

Ha! I said in the comments awhile back that I thought Vincent Smith was my favorite to do some damage. Called it!
Glad to hear Robinson is on them for fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. That is Michigan football. I always thought Shafer's stuff was really flashy, and I'm glad to hear that we're going back to basics.
How is JB Fitzgerald doing? He was an impact special teams player all over the field last year, and I really like his game. How does he stack up?
So Forcier can at least be a game manager at this point? Is he holding onto the football and not making turnovers?
