Mailbag question: Regarding Devin Gardner

Loving the updates from the Coach's Clinic.

Regarding Devin Gardner, seems like he needs a fair amount of work on his passing technique and footwork. In this area, he seems behind the 2009 recruits. Is that an area where players actually make significant improvements or are their techniques too subconscious or too much of a habit to change?

Thanks,

Bob from Cary, NC

Thanks for the question and comment.

Gardner walked past us this weekend; we were shocked at just how big he is--tall and thick. He really looked more like a tight end than a quarterback.

On film, Gardener shows great athletic ability, particularly with his movement skills.

At this time, in our opinion, he is more an athlete playing quarterback than a pure quarterback. If he does improve his fundamentals and mechanics, and combines those with his athletic ability, he will become a very good quarterback.

Quick comment, this response didn't seem to really respond to the question.

You simply said that if he does improve his mechanics then he'll be very good but you didn't really address the question of how hard or easy that will be to do.

Since I'm extremely interested in that very question, I'm slightly disappointed at your lack of an answer. Do you have any particular insights into how hard it will be?

Improving the footwork is the key here. If you improve that, the rest becomes easier. Good news is the footwork is very correctable. Some of arm mechanics are tougher fix. Kind of like trying to fix your golf swing. But with enough reps and practice it can be done.
