Mailbag question: Dann O'Neill

Heard anything on why Dann O'Neil left the football program? I read a few times that he was going to be the next Jake Long. He seemed like quite an intellectual - maybe he just wants to focus on his studies?

Thanks,

Cam P.

Thanks for the question.

Football is not for everyone. It takes a lot of time and you must endure much pain.

O'Neill is example of talented kid who has interests other than football. Coach Rod talks about wanting players who love to play football. Because that is, what it takes to succeed in the new regime.

We was hearing from some so called “insider” who sometimes post on GBW before the spring football practices during winter conditioning that O’Neill was battling and also probably going to be the starting tackle.

As we watched O’Neill practice this spring it was obvious to us, all four of us (CoachBt, ErocWolverine, MaizeMan and Doc4blu) that Dann was not enjoying himself very much and that “insider” does not know what he is talking about Michigan football or does not have the connections he continues to say he does.

The majority of the team was having fun this spring competing and working hard. Dann O'Neill was one of the few who were not, at least in our opinion.

Well during the women’s football academy, Coach Rod said Dann and he have discussed the matter and no defined answer has come out yet. The thing we see since we were one of the group of people bringing this up during the spring practices that since he brought it out we have to ASSume that Dann is or will not be back on the team since most of time these type of matters do not get discussed until after the fact with Coach Rod or he says we do not talk about kids who do not play for Michigan.

Is this why not everyone plays high school football? Or why not every high school football player doesn't play in college? Or why not every college football player doesn't play in the NFL?

I agree Rick. Maybe O'neill just flat out sucked & knew he would never start in front of his teammates.

From a pure athltic stand point O'Neill was on par with all the Olinemen this spring with exception of Omameh. Moved well for his size and handled all the agility drills as well or better than most his peers. Football is as much about desire and what we call want to as athletic ability. In our opinion it was the want to that O'Neill lacked, not the ability.
