Mailbag question: Several questions
Hello Eroc and Coach,
Here is a question that I would love your input on especially given your knowledge of the program/system. What would you ideally recruit for the system.
For instance. 1. QB..do you prefer a QB who is a better thrower or runner? Or is equally gifted at both aspects of the position. How many QB's would you ideally have ready to play...3 or 4? 2. RB..scat back or power back wtih speed?
Would a Biakabutuka be a good fit or more like a Jamie Morris type? 3. DL bigger guys or smaller quick guys? Campbell or Messer? 4. LB...physical guys or guys who can run and blitz? Combination? Give me an example of a linebacker you would like to have.Dhani Jones or Ian Gold or Erick Anderson? Just curious on how you would recruit for a position. I know on the OL you would want guys who have good foot movement who can get downfield and WR's who have good hands and can run well in the open field.
Sincerely, John W.

Thanks for the questions.
You can be very successful and win with any of the combinations you listed. We personally prefer a thrower who can also run. In our opinion this gives defenses the most problems because it makes it very difficult for the safeties to crowd the line of scrimmage. Backing safeties up and making them play honest opens not only the running game, but also the short passing game that makes Coach Rod's version of spread tough to defend.
Running backs: We prefer a power runner with speed combined with a smaller third down, change of pace speed. Coach Rod had a great combination at West Virgina with Slaton and DeVine.
Defensive Line: Again prefer a combination of the two. We like having one super strong. Larger nose tackle / defensive tackle to eat space and command a double team. Combine that with two very mobile, quick and explosive defensive ends to angle and stunt.
You need to look at Michigan linebackers as three different positions. Inside linebackers would recruit David Harris or Larry Foote type players. At Spinner / Quick Shawn Crable or Shazor is type of player who would be excellent fit. At weakside linebacker a Jamar Adams Cato June, safeties who are better at run defense, but still capable of playing some coverage.
