Michigan Football Tidbits: Regarding the "Star Rankings"
Michigan Football Tidbits: Regarding the "Star Rankings"
We have to believe that every ranking service uses NFL potential as one of the criteria whether they want to admit it or not. Everyone attempts to project future development so if those players make it big-time in the NFL they can say "We predicted it" and just as fans that brag about the NFL players once they do well in the NFL like past Wolverine Tom Brady.
The question for us is this: What would you rather have an NFL prospects or maybe very good football players who may stay at a school for five years.
Our preference of course is a little of both. We believe you have to have those top rated "elite" kids at skilled positions especially at quarterback.
We believe Michigan is trying to hard to do a little of both now. And as more success comes to Michigan the more likely we get more high four or five star kids.
Barwis has talked on this issue at almost every event we have attended. He does not at times use the terms four or five star, but he does discuss upside potential and he sees a difference between kids. He has told us that it is better to get these elite talents because you have a better chance to improve them and also their ceiling is a lot higher than most three star or lower type of kid. He has told us as well that you can improve a three star type kid into a four or possible five star kid, but it is a lot easier starting off with a four or five star kid and making them elite.
Most fans like the star rankings when it goes in their favor, but then hate it or bring up players in the past that were ranked lower. I guess that is the nature of the beast. One thing about it there are a lot more three star kids so the percentage of some of those players turning into NFL type talent will be there, but there are many that fail as well.
One last comment recruiting at Michigan under Coach Rod continues to be hard to analyze sometimes. While on the one hand we really like the renewed aggressiveness and we do believe Coach Rod has already made adjustments and is using Michigan itself as a recruiting tool.
When he first arrived at Michigan we believe he felt he could win with any players because of his system. Now we believe he sees that Michigan can recruit with anyone. We also believe he gets too enamored with certain type of players (nothing wrong with that), but while some continue to argue about the lack of depth at certain positions it is just difficult for us to figure out where some of these kids fit in.
For the balance of the year we think Michigan will accept commits for any top rated kid (no matter what position), but may be hesitant to accept a commit from any offense player who is not top rated.
Defense is another story we think we take lower rated kids on defense. If it determined that that player has a bigger upside than ratings indicate. Wilkins is prime example. Defense you need athletes along with depth right now in which Michigan lacks badly at certain positions in our opinion.

agree think that those kids need to grow up. they have no inside info about michigan. true fan knows eveyrthing about his team. love blog keep writing thanks
I think Coach Rod should recruit alot more 2 and 3 star playrs. There have been ALOT of 4 and 5 star busts and transfers over the years but then alot of low star guys turn out to be pat Whites and Mike Harts, and they stay at 1 school no transfers.
I dont know about you but i'd rather have Pat White and mike Hart in my backfeild then Ryan "transfer" Mallet and Kevin Grady!!
