Michigan Football Tidbits: Stuff

B. Smith of course has moved to linebacker, but it is not out of the question that he plays the safety / hybrid spot in fall practices. Will keep close tabs on linebackers in fall. There could be some movement unless current depth chart players show they can perform.

This issue of players leaving team and whether this will be a trend under Coach Rod is something Coach Rod himself addressed at recent coaches meeting.

He understands why kids leave, but states clearly that every kid who has left Michigan did not have the "love" for the game or did not feel he fit in with new system.

In addition, he readily admits there are certain positions they would over-recruit in the first few years. And because of that there are going to be some kids who naturally are not going to be happy.

When watching practices it is so evident that two thirds of the team are offensive players. It is tilted way too much in offensive team favor. Those numbers over the next few years will even out either through recruiting or through kids who will leave the program.

But, it cannot be argued that the program itself hasn't changed dramatically. First the strength and conditioning program is so much more intense and for those who do not see a future at Michigan in terms of playing a significant roll at Michigan you have to wonder if they will go through the program year in and year out.

Also the so-called preferences shown to upperclassman are also gone. When Coach Rod says kids earn playing time - he means it. Under Coach Carr (whether you like it our not) there was a feeling that when you became a junior or senior you would get certain privileges and have earned playing time.

Up next all the camps are coming up and we will find out who in Detroit area are pushed by coaching staff.

Did you play for Michigan? Where do you get this "feeling"? I don't think that becoming a Senior means you get playing time. It's based on experience and skill level. i.e. Mike Hart & Chad Jonathan Henne started as Freshman over the upper classMEN.

Also, If Carr was still coaching would that mean The David Cone Bone starts this fall? He would probably take us to a BCS championship. No question.
